Dr. Jason John is OneReef’s Director of Operations and Strategy. A conservation biologist with experience spanning scientific research, public policy, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector, Jason brings a strong commitment to community-led conservation and a desire to help connect OneReef’s people, programs, and priorities.
Jason previously served as Deputy Director of the California Council on Science and Technology, where he helped connect science and policy in California across topics including conservation, clean energy, and climate resilience. Prior to that, Jason was the Acting Director of Sierra Club California, where he oversaw engagement with California policy on conservation, renewable energy, and transportation. He was also Science and Policy Lead for the California Natural Resource Agency’s Biodiversity and Habitat Team, where he helped develop the state’s Pathways to 30×30 strategy. Prior to working in policy, Jason worked for 12 years in biomedical and conservation biology, including working with state, federal, and non-profit conservation partners and multiple research seasons at the National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
Jason graduated with a BS in Biological Sciences from Santa Clara University and a PhD in Physiological Ecology from the University of California Santa Cruz.
