OneReef has been partnering with Ngarchelong State Office and Rteluul Community Regeneration Organization (RCRO) to clear and reinstate the traditionally maintained channels through the mangroves, install sediment traps, maintain the sites and conduct hands-on training.
After completing the pilot in Taoch er a Chermang/Ibesang, the second phase of the Agroforestry Project was in Taoch er a Ngerbauand and applied a community-led and youth-supported approach which is grounded in traditional knowledge. Its primary objectives are to:
🌱 Restore mangrove water flow and outlets
🌱 Improve nursery habitats for fisheries
🌱 Engage youth and community as stewards
🌱 Link restoration to culture and livelihoods
🌱 Serve as a shelter for boats during bad weather
The project involved community participation from RCRO, youth, students and participants in OneReef’s youth immersion program, teachers, volunteers and community members.
Now that the restoration has been completed, the blocked mangrove outlets have been cleared and water circulation has been restored. There has also been an increase in the population of fish and crabs.
Community benefits have included reduced flooding in taro patches, safe shelter for boats during bad weather, restored daily access and transport through the mangroves and to surrounding waters, as well as stronger community connection to the site.
The second phase of the project in Taoch er a Ngerbau has been supported by the Pawanka Fund.
